v1.4.23 — settings come from the server, and a Trol client can chop again

Races of Valheim developer

Two things, both about the difference between the machine an action happens on and the machine that decides what it means. A Trol's fists were being handed the boss bonus on the host's machine, where the hit does not belong to the local player. And every player's own config file was being read as truth, in a game where everyone has to agree on the numbers.

Trol clients could not chop trees or mine rocks with their fists

The fist bonus — chop and pickaxe damage, and the tool tier that grows with the bosses — was applied on whichever machine owned the tree or rock. That is usually the host, and there the hit does not belong to the local player, so the bonus only ever worked for whoever was hosting. Every other Trol's bare hands were plain unarmed blows against wood and stone.

It is now applied on the attacking player's own machine, before the hit is sent. Thanks to the players who reported it. The whole fist kit, tool tier by tier, is on the Trol page.

Configuration is synced from the server

Every gameplay setting now follows the server's value in multiplayer, and shows as locked in Configuration Manager for players who are not admins. Roughly 350 entries are covered — every number the game computes with: damage, durations, cooldowns, costs, caps, radii, the faction switches.

Keybinds and the purely cosmetic settings stay local, because syncing them would only take the choice away from the player: eye and claw colours, glow and tints, model rotation and offsets, the dorsal-spine nudge, the Head Fire VFX and stamina-bar toggles, debug logging. One entry that reads cosmetic is synced anyway — Attack Reach Offset is a real hit-detection distance and has to stay in step with the server.
