v1.5.0 — the mod speaks Italian, and anyone can teach it another language

Races of Valheim developer

A player asked for a way to translate the mod. Every text it shows now lives in plain JSON files instead of its code, and it ships in English and Italian. On the way, Valheim 1.0 turned out to be sorting two of the mod's stations into the wrong build menu, the Trol's True Form was switching itself off, and the Aswid's Eclipse had never worked at all.

Translations

The race menu, status effects, items and pieces, messages, crosshair prompts, the faction merchants with their jokes, and the compendium: nearly eight hundred texts in all, in seven files under a Translations folder next to the mod. The mod follows the language picked in Valheim's own settings, and any text a language leaves out falls back to English.

Adding a language takes no code: copy the English folder, rename it, translate the values. The Translations page has the rules.

A few things the files do so that a translation does not have to fight them:

  • Numbers and names go where the sentence needs them. A cooldown or a boss arrives as $1, and a translator can put it at the start, the end or the middle.
  • Boss and creature names come from the game's own translations, so a merchant called Greydwarf or a message naming The Elder is already translated.
  • A race's name on screen is separate from the id saved with your character, so a character saved in one language is still the same race in another.
  • Quotes and song titles stay as written. "Purple Rain", "Like a Bat out of Hell", "Vae Victis" and the rest are references, and the Italian leaves them alone on purpose.

The Italian merchant jokes are Nando's: each pun was adapted rather than translated wherever the English wordplay had no Italian equivalent.

The Crystal Golem was under Decorations

Valheim 1.0 sorts the Hammer's pieces by a set of tags, and the mod had never set them. Every piece kept the tags of whatever it was cloned from. The Crystal Golem and the Bound Sentry are cloned from a guard stone, which is a decoration; the other stations only landed under Crafting because their own sources happened to be crafting pieces. All of them sit under Crafting now.

True Form switched itself off

From Fader on, the Trol grew into True Form and shrank straight back, with no status and no cooldown. Two copies of the Trol's controller were running, and both read the same key press. Past Fader that key is a toggle, so the second copy turned the form off in the same frame the first one turned it on.

Eclipse had never worked

Pressing J as an Aswid announced the eclipse and then did nothing: no night, no bonuses, no cooldown, and every press after that was ignored until the game restarted. The code set two of the game's time-of-day fields the wrong way round, the first write threw, and the ability stayed marked as running.

It works now, and it asks for midnight rather than noon, which is what the old value would have given. The sky runs through dusk over about four seconds instead of going dark in one frame, and Aswid → Eclipse has the timing. Thanks to the player who reported it.

Smaller, and still worth knowing

  • The radial menu no longer swings your form. Clicking a wheel button with the left mouse button also fired the transformed form's attack.
  • The Drake's Middle Mouse no longer spends the cooldown. The Drake has no Middle Mouse attack, but pressing it started the cooldown and showed its icon anyway.
  • The Ulv stopped filling the log with "FAiled to find foot:LeftHand". Its run animation asked the player's body for front paws twice a stride. Its footsteps were never missing. Thanks to the player who reported it on Discord.
  • The Ulv's howl makes a sound again.
  • Fenrir sounds reach other players again. The 1.4.24 notes said these sounds had been writing into the world save. They had not, and the change made for it left other players unable to hear them. They are spawned the game's own way again.
  • The Cold Spell key's description says tier 2, where the spell actually unlocks.

Known issue

The Trol's Log Weapon cannot be grabbed on current Valheim: the prompt does not appear and E does nothing. It is next on the list.
